I started playing chess eight months ago and earned my first norm (Fourth Category) playing in the Sophomore Section of the Minnesota Open. The norm system is completely separate from the National Master and (Original) Life Master Titles that are earned by reaching 2200 and maintaining 2200+ for 300 games, respectively. You can access an excel spreadsheet that does all the math for you here: A higher norm counts for all lower norm categories. You must play at least four rounds (if three rounds, you need to win two more points than expected), and the tournament must be a regular (or dual-rated) time control. To earn a norm, you must earn one more point at a tournament than would be expected for someone at that rating level. To earn the title, you must earn five norms, and for Candidate Master and above, have reached that rating threshold.
